Matabeleland mines scoop top awards

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) recently held the inaugural Gold Sector Awards in Harare.
The awards which ran under the theme, "Recognizing Gold Producers' Contribution to National Output and Foreign Currency Generation" saw at least five national winners in the large and small scale sector category, walk away with handsome prices.
There were also provincial winners.
Speaking during the awards ceremony, Dr Morris Mpofu the Chairman for Gold Mobilization Technical Committee (GMTC) said, "the awards were constituted in order to reward compliant gold producers, millers and buyers, hence the formation of the Adjudication Committee under the auspices of the GMTC."
The National Winners for Large Scale sector producers saw Freda Rebecca Mine scooping the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Trophy.
The award came with a 5% export incentive for a period of 12 months.
On second and third spot where How Mine and Blanket Mine which were awarded with 4% and 3.5 % export incentive, respectively.
Not to be outshined, the Chamber of Mines honoured the most improved large scale gold producer Redwing Mine with a 4% export incentive scheme, and a 3,5% incentive for the first runner up, Rio Tinto-Cam and Motor.
The National winners for the small scale sector was awarded to Vansburg Drum Gold Enterprise from Midlands, while the Zimbabwe Miners Federation Trophy for the overall best small scale gold miner went to Epoch 17.
The Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FPR) Trophy for the best overall gold buying agent was scooped by Shasha Gomez; while the best overall small scale woman gold miller and gold miner went to Fascom Investments from Manicaland and Gossan 21-Gatsha Dube of Matebelelend South, respectively.
Eight best provincial small scale gold miners and provincial buying agents were also honoured in accordance to the level of gold production as provided by the level of gold deliveries (sales) to FPR.
The small scale miners, millers and buying agents walked away with at least 8 compressors, 8 60KVA generators, 8 motorbikes and portable scales, USD$ 000 worth of mining explosives, US$5 000 worth of mining chemicals, 1 000litres of fuel, among other prizes.
Best small scale millers in differing provinces were awarded prizes which recognized the best gold miller in terms of consistency between the level of gold processed and that sold to FPR and compliance to safety, health and environment.
Gold production is currently considered critical to the economy hence necessitating this move to come up with the Gold Sector Awards that are aimed at promoting competitiveness and increased output of the precious mineral.
