Swift Current City of Canada helps rural school children of Zimbabwe enjoy the beautiful game of soccer with donated equipment

Some rural school children in Bubi District will now be able to enjoy playing the beautiful game of soccer, courtesy of the kindness of the residents of Swift Current City in Canada who rallied and collected soccer equipment from parents and the business community, which they then sent to the Collin Nyabadza Children's Voice Charitable Trust (CNCVCT) in Zimbabwe to be distributed to some schools the children's charity supports.

The project was a brainchild of the Swift Current Soccer Association (SCSA) where the Executive Director of the CNCVCT Mr. Collin Nyabadza is a volunteer coach for a boys U-16/18 team. After collecting the equipment from the community, the SCSA then went on a fundraising drive to raise funds for the shipping of the equipment to Zimbabwe. They raised over $1 000 at their annual soccer fest.

They then partnered with a local ice- cream place Dairy in an effort to raise more funds. In that event, 50 cents in every ice-cream sold on that day was donated to the CNCVCT, and within a few hours an amount of $480 was raised for the project. Other organisations and individuals chipped in as well. The Anglican Church Women (ACW) of the St. Stephen's Church donated a cheque for $500, with the Catholic Social Justice Committee of the Roman Catholic Church in the city contributing $50. It was amazing how an entire community came together to help children thousands of miles away.

After that had been done, the equipment, three big barrels, was then shipped to Zimbabwe. On Tuesday 31st May, 2016 the Board Chairperson of the CNCVCT Mr. Siqhubumthetho Dube was at work as he handed over the equipment to five schools in Bubi District. These are Lortendale, Balanda and Mdutshane Primary and Majiji Secondary Schools. Due to lack of time the fifth school, Somvubu Secondary School could not be reached and thus would be handed over the equipment at a later date. Accompanying Mr. Dube was the MP for Bubi Mr. Clifford Cameron Sibanda a dynamic individual who takes children's issues seriously. He was accompanied by his wife.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Dube urged the teachers and the children to take very good care of the equipment so that it could last longer. He also emphasized that his organization was a non-political one which is there to serve all children in the areas they support.

In his message from his Canadian base, Mr. Nyabadza had this to say,  "I really feel indebted to the SCSA and the entire Swift Current community for the tremendous support they have given and continue to give to the children of Zimbabwe through our charity. It is my sincere hope that all Zimbabweans get to learn and embrace the culture of giving and that of sharing. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who worked extremely hard to help make this project a success".

The CNCVCT is however facing challenges through the lack of a program vehicle to enable them conclude some of their projects within a short space of time. They are therefore appealing to individuals and business people to help them secure a vehicle.

"The availability of a program vehicle would certainly treble our work with the schools we support", lamented the organisation's Board Chairperson, Mr. Dube.
