A Marange man has landed himself in trouble with the law for allegedly ill-treating his daughter who he burnt with hot charcoal.

Manica Post reported that Obert Chikonzo (38) appeared before  Venencia Mugota facing charges of contravening Section 7 (1) of the Children's Act, Chapter 5:06 which outlaw the ill-treatment of children in any way.

He was remanded out of custody to March 30 on $100 bail.

The court heard that in February at Chikonzo Village under Chief Marange, Chikonzo intentionally burnt his nine-year-old daughter who is doing Grade Two at Murehwa Primary School with hot charcoal.

He placed the charcoal on her following a report from a neighbour that she had stolen her packet of maputi.

"Circumstances are that the girl stole one packet of maputi from Rosina Makuwe who later went on to report to her mother, Mary Mutambaneshiri. T he mother informed her husband about the case who then called the child from the kitchen and burnt her.

"Her mother came to rescue, but it was too late since she was already burnt," said  Karombe. The matter came to light after the complainant was seen by the headmaster with blisters. She was later taken to the clinic where she was medically examined.

Asked why he committed the offence Chikonzo said it was a mistake. "It was just a mistake. I never burnt her deliberately, Your Worship," said Chikonzo. The matter was adjourned to March 30 for trial.
