The construction of a $2 million bridge at Zivagwe River along Chivhu to Murambinda Road which is a black spot that caused many accidents and deaths has been completed.

The bridge is 10 kilometres from Chivhu.

Masvingo Mirror reported that the construction of the bridge took about five years having started in 2011. Work stopped in 2012 and resumed in 2015.

The Mashonaland East provincial engineer Kudzai Maganga said approximately $2 million was used to complete the standard high level dual carriageway bridge.

"The Ministry of Transport is also maintaining part of the road, just after the Chivhu town towards Murambinda, which was in bad state.  The maintenance is at an advanced stage," said Maganga.

Chikomba Rural District Council (RDC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Luckson Mutara said the low level carriageway bridge was a barrier to investment for the district as most potential investors avoided the bad road.

"Most people were avoiding the road that links Chivhu, Murambinda and Mutare because it was very bad. They used other routes, by-passing Chivhu, hence we lost a lot of investors. Besides, a lot of people lost their lives at the bridge because the old bridge was by far too small for the traffic that uses the road," said the CEO.

Maganga said the Zivagwe Bridge will be officially commissioned by the First Lady Grace Mugabe after the completion of road maintenance along the Chivhu-Murambinda Road.
