A troop of baboons last week raided the YA FM guest house in Zvishavane, ate and spoiled some food in the kitchen.

Last month, a group of baboons invaded the station's premises and chewed part of the transmission cables, forcing producers to abort programming for an hour.

The guest house occupied by the station's general manager - Davies Mugadza and chief consultant - Zenzele Ndebele was left in a mess last Thursday with flour, mealie meal and sugar spread across the kitchen.

Ndebele yesterday said they had themselves to blame for leaving kitchen windows open.

"Zvishavane is heavily infested with baboons. The mistake we made was to leave the kitchen windows open.

"The baboons basically opened all foodstuffs and when we got home, we found the kitchen in a mess. Mealie meal, sugar and flour had been spilt all over," Ndebele said.

He said the YA FM site, where the first troop of baboons had pounced was now being manned by a security guard.

"A security guard had to be hired to watch over the transmission tower. Ever since that day, we haven't had a problem with the baboons, apart from the house invasion," Ndebele said.

He said the radio station which started broadcasting in October this year had been received well by the Zvishavane mining community.

"YA FM has helped discover new talent as most up-and-coming artistes here had no platform to shine. We receive over 700 messages on WhatsApp daily showing just how much the community is engaging with us."
