JOHANNESBURG - The most precious thing the Mthwakazi descendants possess; Highlanders FC, represents the soon to re-emerge Ndebele Kingdom, thousands of followers recently learned.

Speaking at the 'BOSSO @ 90, Celebrating our heritage' event at the Berea (Alec Gorshel) Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, historian Arnold Mayibongwe Nkala spoke as bald as a cue ball about this much loved club.

"Bosso was formed to preserve the Ndebele culture which was being destroyed by the white regime for political reasons. Two of its founders, Rhodes Lobhengula and Albert were King Lobhengula's grandchildren. The other co-founder Nsele Hlabangana, had a sister (Hobile) who was married to King Lobhengula's grandchild Dabengwa, son of Mhlambi," he said.

"They named the team Lions F.C. because the Ndebele Kings are refered to as Lions (iZilo). The black and white kit was derived from the fact that the first military regiment that was formed by King Lobhengula (AmaWaba) wore black and white regalia. The emblem is a large shield called isihlangu, which is a Ndebele traditional war shield. The motto 'Siyinqaba' means 'We are a fort'. A fort, in the form of mountains, was part of the Ndebele military strategy. The songs that are usually sung by the fans are extracted from the Ndebele traditional songs.

"The team was later refered to as Highlanders, a name for Ndebele troops that attacked from the top. Basically, the team is part of the Ndebele culture and all people from around the world who love it are welcome to support it," he added. Nkala is also a cultural activist and Deputy Secretary at Ibutho LeNqama.

Thousands that thronged the Berea Park included; Alexander Maseko, Faith Silandulo Dube, Ayanda Khumalo, Ngqabutho Mabhena, Prudence Moyo, Mxolisi Ncube and Mr Mkhwebu to name just a few.

Singer Thandani Mlala was blessed to set the event in motion whilst Maskandi Ambassadors Amabhukudwana were honoured to be given the nod to close the event with their smash hit 'Khuzani Amapholisa AseGoli'.
Other musicians who entertained the jubilant audience included; Ibhantinti Elisha, Ikhwezi Elihle, Mzilikazi KB, Sabelo Sgabade, Paradise Queens, Matebeleland Young Brothers,  Ubuhle BeGozi, Izinkanyezi ZeZulu, Ubhejane Obomvu, Insikabayishiye, Imbizo, Amafikamahle, Abafana bakaGodlwayo, Amachwane Amahle, Insukamini, Amathobanhliziyo, Zinjaziyamluma and Victress Mathuthu the poetess.
MCs Mcasiseli Gwaza Ndlovu and Fortune Mxoshwa Ndebele also gave a splendid performance.

The icing on the cake was the presence of our royal house; AmaNtungwa who had Ayanda and Bornman Khumalo in attendance. Bornman graced the staged and shared a speech worth of a royal prince.
"I would like to thank Amahlolanyama Golf Club for buying our coach a car. They did very well and set a very good example to all of us. Let us do anything that will help our team and our nation," he said.

"The crown prince who will be our King has been identified but for now he can't be named for security reasons. We denounce those who impose themselves on the nation as Kings of the Ndebele and we would like to encourage you to desist from joining other nations but dwell on uplifting ours as charity begins at home," he concluded.

The combination of Bosso SA Chapter the event hosts and cultural regiment Ibutho LeNqama hit a home run event. Multitudes of fans were at home away from home in this event as proven by the huge turnout and constant cheers.

However,  the home truth is that Highlanders is struggling financially whilst its millions of fans scattered worldwide takes no action. Millions seems to be a lost ball in the weed.
The ball is in the Chapters' courts (especially the SA Chapter) to acquire as much membership as they can to ease the financial situation the club is facing. Once that is accomplished our club will be home free.
