POPULAR television drama Stitsha is set to make a comeback as a play, with Bulawayo based production company, Qhube Productions, holding auditions for actors on Sunday and Monday next week.

The director of the Qhube productions Sihlangu Dlodlo revealed this information yesterday.

He said the auditions would be held at Amakhosi Theatre and would begin at 9am and end at 4pm on both days.

"I believe that it is the greatest African play ever written. Cont has written a lot of plays, but Stitsha is the best," said Dlodlo.

He said the auditions were open to anyone above the age of 18 who was talented and confident.

"We want all people young and old to come and showcase their talent, in acting, dancing and singing. Registration is in progress and will close an hour before auditions start," said Dlodlo.

He said those interested could also register via sms on 0772 514 246.

Dlodlo said the reason he decided to do the play was because it was a way to celebrate classic local plays.

"I decided to do the play because of nostalgic reasons. I get jealous when I see people doing Macbeth and other Shakespearean plays, while shunning our own classic productions.

"As Zimbabweans we should celebrate our own classic acts," said Dlodlo.

He said the play would have a new feel to it, as there would be a fusion of ballet, hip-hop, traditional and contemporary dance.

"I did this for two reasons, for the play to have universal appeal and that it is grounded in the culture of Bulawayo and Ndebele culture in particular," said Dlodlo.

He said the Stitsha final cast would be chosen by end of May and the play would premiere at Amakhosi Theatre by 3 August.

"We shall pick the lead role from the cast, which would be chosen by the end of May. Thereafter from 6 June until 31 July we shall hold rehearsals and the premiere will be on 3 August," said Dlodlo.

Stitsha is a play written by Cont Mhlanga about a woman's struggle to be recognised and listened to when she wants to produce a play.

Stitsha was aired on ZBCtv and the late Beatar Mangethe played the lead role.
