BULAWAYO - Derrick Majaivana, son of self-exiled legendary musician Lovemore Tshuma Majaivana, has moved a gear up in his bid to revive his father's legacy as he begins a fresh journey into the showbiz industry.

The young Majaivana who has only become a common feature at national musical galas has apparently made his mind about regular live shows.

This has also been the case with other sons of the legends such as Tryson and Suluman Chimbetu, Peter "Dhewa" Moyo, Biggie Junior Tembo and others.

Having temporarily relocated to the city that bore his umbilical cord,  Bulawayo, the young Majaivana will tomorrow perform at Horizon Pub alongside jazz musician Mandla Gama.

Speaking to the Daily News Majaivana said he was back in the city to set the tone for his musical career.

"I am actually back home to get things going for my career. I am really honoured to be here and to all my father's fans who have been yearning to hear his voice over the years. To all of them I say I am now here. My Saturday show can be safely referred to as the comeback of Majaivana," said Derrick who for years has been residing in the capital.

He, however, said while many people enjoyed listening to his father's long time hits, he was not going to do just that and insisted that he was going to fuse with some tracks from his upcoming album, Angeke.

"I know many people have been asking me to play my father's popular tracks, but I do have some good stuff of my own.

"My upcoming album, Angeke will be out by September this year and they can hear my own stuff.

"In particular, I will play the title track Angeke Ngivuke and a dedication to Highlanders Football Club called Ayeza Amathendele," explained Derrick who for quite some time was under the tutorship of dub poet Albert Nyathi.

Gama is one of the few jazz musicians who have of late been regularly performing in the posh and public venues dotted around the city.

Despite the sometimes low turnouts at some of his shows, Gama has joined forces with Derrick.

On May 5, the duo had a memorable all night gig at Jabula Inn in Esigodini.

Just recently they also sealed a deal with a local night spot Cape to Cairo that will see them conducting live Friday concerts every week.

"Bulawayo musicians have not been that active, so with this we are merely beginning to cultivate the culture of local musicians being celebrated. People are now going to see us more often doing live shows.

"We therefore urge fans to come in their numbers, as we will be doing nothing but entertaining them," said Gama whose second album titled Groovy Town is due for release this winter.

His debut album released some two years ago is known as Funa Sizwe Mama. It is from these two albums that he is set to draw some tracks to thrill the crowd on Saturday.

The show is billed to kick off at 2pm until 8pm.
