Miss Curvy 2012 draws 20 models

The Miss Curvy 2012 pageant preparations have started and indications are that this year's edition will be bigger and better compared to last year when only three provinces took part.

This year, 20 models drawn from Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Bindura and Chinhoyi are set to battle it out at the national finals for the country's most curvaceous woman. The event will be held later this year in the capital, Harare.

Speaking to Saturday Leisure Zim Gossips director Mercy Mushaninga, the brains behind the pageant, said after the inaugural pageant last year, they went back to the drawing board and came up with better ideas to make the pageant a national event.

"Last year was our first year and we realised there were more curvaceous women who were willing to take part and this year we have opened our doors and we are looking forward to a bigger and better show," said Mushaninga.

She said casting would begin in Harare next month before they move to other towns and cities scouting for curvy women.

"This year we will have our casting session earlier and we will begin in Harare next month and move to the other cities and towns in August.

This year's winner would be a true reflection of the country's most curvaceous woman," she said.

Mushaninga said after the preliminaries the finalists were expected to go into boot camp for a week before the finals.

The woman behind outgoing Miss Zimbabwe, Malaika Mushandu's success story, Mushaninga said she decided to host the pageant after being inspired by curvaceous women who were interested in modelling.

"We have African women being undermined because of their size. We want to dispel this Western notion that only the slim ladies qualify to be models," she said. Most beauty pageants operate on the misguided discriminatory premise that the svelte figure is the only true definition of beauty that deserves recognition.

Last year, the title went to University of Zimbabwe student Tanya Chikuni who is set to crown her predecessor at the Miss Curvy 2012 finals slated for 20 October at a venue to be advised.

Bulawayo's Bekezela Mlalazi finished as the first princess.
