STAFF members from the country's nine state universities are set to hold a sporting tournament to honour President Mugabe for his contribution in developing the education sector, the Chronicle reported.

President Mugabe, who is the Chancellor of all State universities, would officially open the event to be staged by the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) from 29 August to 1 September 2012.

Representatives of staff associations from the state universities yesterday met at Nust to review preparations and craft the programme for the day.

The institutions are Nust, University of Zimbabwe, Lupane State University, Midlands State University, Great Zimbabwe University, Zimbabwe Open University, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Bindura University of Science Education and Harare Institute of Technology.

In an interview the chairperson of the national organising committee of Chancellor of Zimbabwe State universities' games, Mr Readyforward Dube, said the event was the first of its kind in the country.

"University employees sat down and agreed there was a need to honour President Mugabe, who is our Chancellor for his role in developing education in the country. Since 1980 the President has worked hard to establish the universities we have today," said Mr Dube.

"The event is the first of its kind. We have a working budget of $65 000 and we are inviting well wishers to assist us. We also want to use the games to interact, share knowledge and do outreach programmes to assist the disadvantaged communities.

"It is the role of universities to do research and help needy communities. We also need to teach communities how to run and administer sports."

Nust's director of information and public relations Mr Felix Moyo said on the same day President Mugabe would also officially open the Delta Lecture Theatre, which was undergoing refurbishment.

"The Chancellor has confirmed he will be here to officially open the games. On the same day he will officially open the Delta Lecture Theatre after its refurbishment by Delta Beverages," said Mr Moyo.

"Every year staff associations organise annual games among themselves. This time they decided to organise the games in honour of the Chancellor, His Excellency President Mugabe."

Miss Shamiso Bembende from Bindura University said the event would provide an opportunity for academics, administrators and support staff to interact on an equal footing.

The technical director for the games, Mr Bernard Njekeya, said President Mugabe's role in the development of education in the country should be honoured by all and that the games were a form of tribute to him.

Meanwhile, Nust has said the registration of its students would be held between 17 and 21 September for first years and 24 and 28 September for returning students.
