Electricity from sewerage waste for Bulawayo residents

Bulawayo City Council plans to convert sewage waste into energy in a bid to easy electricity problems.

The municipality is working with South Africa's eThekwini on the project.

City engineer Simela Dube told a Bulawayo Progressive Residents' Association meeting of the plans.

"We are working on the project with eThekwini municipality which has been doing it for years. With the project, we hope to generate some income also" said Dube.

He would not say when the project would kick off and at what cost.

Dube said the sole aim is to mitigate power cuts.

Bulawayo, like any city in Zimbabwe is not spared from power cuts a move that has seen most businesses and households resorting to use generators.

Last year,  Harare City Council announced that is has embarked on similar a three-million-dollar project which will see the local authority generating at least 2,5 megawatts of electricity from sewage.
