Police fire tear gas at 200 MDC-T protesters outside the High Court

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Witnesses say police fired tear gas to disperse supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change led by prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai outside a courthouse.

Witnesses said Monday about 200 protesters gathered outside the High Court in downtown Harare where 29 activists of the former opposition were being brought for a bail hearing. They are seeking bail on charges of murdering a police officer a year ago.

Witnesses say that protesters scuffled with police. There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.

The detained suspects are accused of killing a policeman outside a bar in western Harare in May, 2011. Repeated demands for bail have been refused.

In March, seven policemen were granted $50 bail each a month after their arrest over the murder of mine worker north of Harare.
