The suspect, Lizwe Ncube, is believed to be part of a drug syndicate.
On the day in question at around 8:30pm, Ncube was spotted by an informer loading bags of the contraband onto his Toyota Spacio, at a homestead identified as belonging to one Chiwanza.
The informer tipped off the cops who drove to the scene along Katiyo-Chisuko Road which is adjacent to Chiwanza’s homestead.
However, Ncube is said to have spotted them driving towards him and he allegedly took off at high speed heading towards Ruda.
The police detectives gave chase and while in hot pursuit, sent a signal to their station and requested for backup.
A roadblock was mounted by other police officers at the 34km peg along Aberfoyle Road near Honde River Bridge just in time before Ncube’s speeding vehicle got to the bridge.
It is alleged upon approaching the roadblock with police in hot pursuit, Ncube failed to control his vehicle and it veered off the road and landed in the river.
He sustained serious injuries and was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.
He was not asked to plead when Harare magistrate Anita Tshuma convened a court session at his hospital bed at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare yesterday.
She remanded him in custody to July 14 after prosecutor Ellen Mokora opposed bail.
