Another man was also shot in the same area in a separate incident on Thursday last week under unclear circumstances.
The two men, who have since been transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, were yesterday reported to be in a critical condition.
Police sources close to the investigations said the Bindura man, Sunny Siamufinya (33), who was travelling in a Ford Ranger double cab driven by his brother Peter, was on his way to a funeral in Madziva when the incident occurred.
Siamufinya was seated at the back of the vehicle and beside him were a dozen loaves of bread which later fell out of the car near Mazowe River bridge. Peter stopped the vehicle about 100 metres from the bridge to pick up the bread.
Another motorist, Marshal Nyamufukudza (37) of Mt Darwin who was driving an Isuzu KB pick-up truck and following behind them stopped his vehicle and picked up the bread before speeding off.
This resulted in a high speed chase with Peter waving at Nyamufukudza to stop.
After travelling for a few kilometres, Nyamufukudza stopped his vehicle and one of the occupants in the Ford Ranger went and collected the bread before returning to their vehicle.
It is alleged that Nyamufukudza charged towards the Ford Ranger and opened fire, hitting Siamufinya in the abdomen.
Siamufinya was rushed to Bindura Hospital before being transferred to Parirenyatwa on Wednesday evening.
Nyamufukudza has since been arrested. In the other incident, it is suspected that Morris Fitzestorm (52) was shot over ownership of mine claims in the area.
Sometime last Thursday, Fitzestorm of Mountain Valley Mine left Mazowe for Harare and left his bicycle at a guardroom at Mazowe Veterinary Services.
He returned a few hours later and took his bicycle before heading towards his mine claim which is in the Manzou area.
Fitzestorm was in the company of another cyclist and along the way they came across a black Mitsubishi Chariot vehicle being driven by the suspect, Tapiwa Kazunga (28) of Nehanda Village in Mazowe.
The vehicle was parked near a bar and had several occupants.
Kazunga then drove behind Fitzestorm before hitting his bicycle, resulting in him falling down.
Kazunga, who was allegedly armed with a revolver, jumped out of his vehicle and shot at Fitzestorm who was lying on the ground.
He jumped into his vehicle and sped off.
Fitzestorm was later assisted by other people who took him to Concession Hospital.
Nurses discovered that Fitzestorm had a bullet in his abdomen and was then transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he was taken to the intensive care unit.
Kazunga is yet to be arrested and investigations are still in progress.
