Four activists of the MDC formation of Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, arrested at the weekend in Masvingo and Mashonaland West provinces respectively, were released Monday after being charged with various offenses.
MDC provincial elections secretary for Masvingo Phillip Manyanye and Gutu district chairman Fabian Mamombe were arrested Sunday for distributing a party newsletter, The Real Change Times and pamphlets.
The two were on Monday taken to Gutu Magistrates Court but released just before arraignment with prosecutors saying they would proceed by way of summons.
In Darwendale, Mashonaland West, Jericho Nonga and Alvin Kundishaya were arrested Saturday on allegations of assaulting a Zanu-PF supporter they accused of starting a fire at a venue of an MDC rally set to be addressed by secretary general Tendai Biti.
The two were also freed Monday after posting $100 bail each at the Chinhoyi Provincial Magistrates Court. They are back in court July 30.
The MDC condemned the arrests saying it will not be distracted in its goal to remove Zanu PF from power by such actions.
Manyanye told Studio 7 reporter Jonga Kandemiiri they were held in filthy cells at Mupandwana Police Station before being released.
"The truth of the matter is that we are not shaken by this kind of behavior," said Manyanye. "We will soldier on to the the end. We cannot give in to Zanu PF and its machinations." Newsletter Activists
