A regional court has sentenced a daring 24-year-old Makuti man Norest Kariyati to an effective seven years' imprisonment for unlawful entry and raping a 57-year-old woman at knife-point in broad-day light.

Kariyati of Kanyonganise village, Chief Dendera in Makuti, appeared before regional magistrate Solomon Jenya last week.

The court heard that on July 26 this year at Kanyonganise village around 11am, Kariyati went to the complainant's homestead and asked for drinking water.

An hour later, he returned and sneaked into the complainant's house unnoticed and hid behind the door.

Upon entering the house while doing her chores, complainant was ambushed by Kariyati who covered her face with an empty cotton bale, before threatening to stab her with a knife if she raised alarm.

Kariyati then raped the woman twice before fleeing from the scene.

The complainant later informed her friend before making a police report. Investigations by police led to accused's arrest later in the day after the complainant positively identified the blue trousers he was wearing, the court heard.
