Senior Zanu-PF member fined US$1 000 for culpable homicide

Guruve South House of Assembly member and former Cabinet minister Edward Chindori Chininga has been fined US$1 000 for culpable homicide after he was involved in an accident that killed one person and injured seven others.

Chindori Chininga (51) was convicted of the charge when he appeared before Bindura magistrate Mr Erick Kadye last week.

State papers show the former minister of mines "failed to keep proper lookout for other road users".

On March 1 this year, Chindori Chininga was driving an unregistered Mercedes-Benz along the Mazowe-Centenary road, heading towards Centenary.

He failed to negotiate a curve near the 5km peg, resulting in the Mercedes-Benz encroaching onto the opposite lane and colliding head on with an oncoming Nissan Datsun vehicle.

Eight people who were aboard the Datsun were injured. One of them later died on admission to Concession Hospital.

The State argued Chindori Chininga failed to keep proper lookout for other road users; was speeding and failed to control his vehicle.

Mr Tafadzwa Mutandwa prosecuted.
