A 44-year-old Chivi woman from Mbeva village was attacked and killed by a crocodile while attempting to rescue her dog from the reptile last week.

Grace Hove was doing laundry at Ngomahuru dam with her three granddaughters when the crocodile attacked her dog. Hove's body was retrieved two days later by officials from National Parks and Wild Life Management intact.

Masvingo Police provincial spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the incident and said the deceased was dragged while attempting to rescue her dog that had been attacked by the crocodile.

The body was discovered two days later by Artwell Madembo and Kirios Mushandike from the National Parks following an alleged mysterious event. Eye witnesses said a strong whirlwind steered the waters, blowing people's clothes into the air before the copse came up floating; raising suspicion that the death could have been caused by a mermaid.

Chivi South legislator, Irvine Dzingirai, who is the son in-law to the late Hove, had to provide transport to officials from National Parks and Chivi Police so that they could get to the scene. What surprised villagers at the scene was that Hove's body had no missing parts, which raised queries whether she was killed by a crocodile or not.

"A strong whirlwind steered the water and created a big hole; then all of a sudden, the body floated," said a National Park official.

Matake however, dismissed the mermaid allegations and insisted that the late Hove had been killed by a crocodile.

"It is suspected that she was killed by a crocodile and we encourage members of the public to stay away from deep waters to avoid such tragic incidents," said Matake.
