Econet Wireless founder Strive Masiyiwa says he plans to set up an annual award to encourage innovators and inventors in Africa.

Making the announcement on his Facebook page Masiyiwa said: "I am pleased to announce that as a result of many suggestions, made by the readers of this page, I plan to set up an annual award to encourage innovators and inventors in Africa.

"I plan to set up annual award to encourage innovators and inventors in Africa, I will be setting up an independent panel that will write the rule and publish them on a special website linked to this Facebook page. Once it is up and running we will be able to participate for cash prizes, the prizes will go to both business entrepreneurs as well as social entrepreneurs."

The rules and guidelines for participating in the awards are going to be set up by an independent panel, that will craft the rules, and publish them on a special website, linked to his Facebook page.

Information on the proposed awards is presently sketchy. Contacted for further details Econet spokesperson Ranga Mberi said he could not provide any additional information on the program as yet.

"We don't have much information besides the one you were able to access on his Facebook page. If anything comes up I will let you know," he said.

Masiyiwa also called upon aspiring writers and movie writers to come to the show because there is going to be a special book prize, for people who writes the most interesting book about stories he shared about his rise.

The book will be published in e-book format. Meanwhile Masiyiwa said on Monday 28, he is going to announce the long awaited award for teachers in Africa, that he proposed earlier this month.
