FIVE men believed to be part of a syndicate involved in the manufacturing of fake vehicle number-plates for resale have been arrested.
Beaven Mashava, Tendai Masango (34), Charles Manyere (42), Ephias Vengesai (31) and Ephraim Matiza (31) appeared before magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei last Friday.
The five pleaded not guilty to fraud charges and were remanded to September 9 on $50 bail each.
Prosecutor Ms Joyce Sithole alleges that the five are an organised syndicate.
Sometime last month, Mashava who works at a local car sales, changed numberplates of a Honda CRV registration ACR 8615 on behalf of a client, it is alleged.
Instead of surrendering the registration plates, Mashava allegedly sold them to Masango.
Masango then reportedly sold the number plates to Manyere who proceeded to process a blank fake registration book bearing the registration number.
Manyere was allegedly assisted by Vengesai to process the fake registration on his computer, the court heard. It is also alleged that Matika also supplied Vengesai with fake numberplates and went on to make more numberplates from his computer.
Manyere reportedly sold the numberplates and fake registration books to Cyrus Garapo and Costa Mutsvairo. Garapo and Mutsvairo have since appeared in court facing separate charges of vehicle theft in which they allegedly destroyed numberplates of cars they would have stolen replacing them with fake ones.
