Cannabis man leaves court in stitches

A Binga man on Tuesday left a court in stitches after he told a magistrate that he resorted to smoking cannabis (mbanje) after failing to find his favourite Madison cigarette brand.

Witness Ndlovu from Siansali village had initially been arrested for threatening to stab his father but was later found in possession of the drug.

Ndlovu who had to be stopped from addressing Binga magistrate Stephen Ndlovu  as "king" pleaded not guilty to the charge of domestic violence but guilty to the one of illegal possession of mbanje.

Ndlovu was cautioned and discharged on both charges.

The accused's father Sanders Ndlovu said his son his son had not produced a knife to stab him but made a verbal threat.

"My son hurled insults at me calling me a foreigner from Zambia and should return to my home land. I was shocked because I am his father and I suspect it is the effects of the mbanje that he had smoked," he said.

The accused brought the courtroom into laughter again when the magistrate passed his verdict and he responded saying, "thank you my king."
