POLICE in Dete, Matabeleland North, have launched a manhunt for a man who allegedly raped a 24-year-old woman after asking for drinking water from her. Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Billy Dube confirmed the incident which occurred on Tuesday.

He said the woman was approached by a stranger while she was with her children.

"On Tuesday the complainant was sitting outside a hut at her homestead with her two children aged six and three at about 2pm," said Insp Dube.

"A stranger approached them and asked for water to drink. The woman sent her six-year-old daughter to go and fetch water from the kitchen. While the girl had gone the man got hold of her shoulders, produced an Okapi knife and threatened to kill her if she screamed."

Insp Dube said the man pulled the complainant into the hut and raped her once.

"After raping her, the man disappeared. The woman reported the matter to the police at Cross Dete base who are now carrying out investigations. Efforts to locate the accused are  being made," he said.
Insp Dube appealed to members of the public who might have information about the man to report to their nearest police station.

"We are appealing to anyone with information about the man to come forward so that the culprit is brought to book. The man is of medium height, slim build with a long face and is dark in complexion.

He has short hair and has pimples on the right side of the face. He was putting on a corduroy three quarter trousers, a stripped black and white T-shirt and black tennis shoes," he said.
