Zim churches gather to pray for peace

Various church denominations gathered this weekend in the capital to pray for peace ahead of elections expected this year.

Zimbabwe's main Christian bodies, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference, the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, the Heads of Christian Denominations, as well as a group called Intercessors for Zimbabwe have come up with a theme for 2012.

The theme "One Zimbabwe United in Faith, Hope, Love and Peace," is meant to continuously remind people of the need to maintain peace even when the country begins preparations for impending elections.   

Speaking on the sidelines of the Apostolic Faith Mission Harare Central Province first quarterly conference, held at the agriculture showgrounds in Harare, Overseer Brighton Tembo and his deputy, Joseph Munemo urged Zimbabweans to continue praying for the government, saying Christians have a responsibility to bring the nation closer to God as elections loom.

Meanwhile, members of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe Mothers' Union held a three day meeting ahead of Easter celebrations at St Pauls Anglican Parish in Highfield.

The conference was attended by members from across the country.

President of the Mothers Union, Mrs Agatha Kunonga said besides teaching women to pursue the path of peace and to tell their children to shun violence, the church is also looking at ways of empowering female members.

Many view the church as the salt that flavours and preserves society from moral decadence and must therefore play a crucial role in ensuring that peace prevails.

From the 6th to the 9th of next month, Christians from across the globe will be celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and in Zimbabwe, it will be an opportunity for most churches to gather and pray for peace.
