Financially limping Bulawayo City Council has resolved to set aside $10 000 for the establishment of a City of Bulawayo Golf Club, according to the latest council report.

"The town clerk (Middleton Nyoni) therefore recommended that council approves the setting - up of Bulawayo Golf Club composed of members of staff and allows expenditure up to $10 000 towards this purpose," part of the report reads.

The report also stated that Nyoni confirmed the potential benefits both to council and the staff members and also revealed that the initially proposed golf club will be housed at Harry Allen Golf Club and could grow to greater heights if properly managed and nurtured.

The club will be set up as a way of collecting resources for service provision and networking.
"Given the networking opportunities availed by the game of golf, the town clerk recommended setting-up of a City of Bulawayo Golf Club.

"This would be a voluntary club composed of senior and middle management that is, those between grades 9 and 16. Besides the vast opportunities for networking that golfing presented, it was a fertile arena for fundraising," read the minutes.

The report also states that once the club had been established, it would host the Bulawayo Annual Golf Day.

Funds from the event would then be channelled towards charitable organisations such as old people's homes and orphanages and would lessen the burden on the council's finances as the organisations are recipients of council's grants-in-aid and fundraising.

The council minutes also revealed that Bulawayo Golf Club will host the City of Kings Gold Tournament shortly so as to show the opportunities for fundraising in golf.

A total of 53 staff members had confirmed their interest in joining the club while lower grade employees would also be considered as the programme is rolled out.

However, only one councillor, Siboniso Khumalo, opposed the idea, arguing that the council's current financial position was not healthy.

Council has in the past been failing to pay its workers their salaries on time due to financial problems.
