Gwindi returns to Barbourfields to face Bosso

FORMER Premier Soccer League secretary-general Lesley Gwindi returns to Barbourfields this weekend as the chairman of Harare City which plays log leaders Highlanders in a Castle Lager Premiership match on Sunday.

The former DeMbare secretary- general bounced back into mainstream football management a day before the league debutants stunned the reigning champions 1-0 through a last minute goal by Quinton Masika.

When he was the league's secretary- general, Gwindi had a fallout with Highlanders supporters who accused him of favouring Dynamos whenever he made any administrative decisions. The incident which quickly comes to mind is his attempt to bar Zenzo Moyo and Dazy Kapenya from playing against Dynamos in a crucial league match on 28 February 1998 but the Highlanders leadership then stood their ground and disobeyed the order. Bosso went on to lift the first of their four league titles in a row.

Present Highlanders assistant coach Bekithemba Ndlovu played in that match.

Now 14 years later, the Zifa presidency losing candidate returns to the stadium in an official capacity as chairman of Harare City and is more than looking forward to the terrific and colourful atmosphere always created by the Tshilamoya fans.

"We are coming to play a game and give a good account of ourselves. Bosso are playing well though and it's always nice to face them," said Gwindi. The Harare City Council public relations manager said what they wanted this year was to remain in the elite league and fight for the championship next season.

He rubbished claims that he was always at loggerheads with Highlanders officials and fans.

"I am coming home. Bulawayo is my second home because I was born there remember. I have no issues with the people of Bulawayo," said Gwindi.
