Matabeleland North Magistrate Livard Philemon has acquitted former Zanu-PF Victoria Falls Mayor Sifiso Mpofu of poaching charges.

Mpofu, a relative of Zanu-PF Politburo member and former minister Obert Mpofu, was arrested with two other people in March for illegal possession of 11 elephant tusks.

Represented by their lawyer Thulani Nkala, Mpofu and his colleagues were acquitted after the magistrate rules that state witnesses gave contradictory statements during trial.
Mpofu controversially won the Mayor's post after the 2013 elections despite the council having been dominated by councillors from the opposition MDC-T party.

The opposition party alleged that the Mayor was assisted by his relative Obert Mpufu to bribe opposition councillors to vote him.
