ZANU-PF in Mashonaland East province has shifted focus towards scaling up preparations for the forthcoming annual conference after a by-election victory in Hwedza at the weekend.

The party's candidate Shorai Manjeya came out tops after garnering 875 votes against MDC Alliance's Vincent Taderera who scored 65 votes.

Last week, Zanu-PF heavyweights including national political commissar Victor Matemanda descended on Hwedza for a full day support mobilisation that was characterised by a youth sports festival before a rally.

Zanu-PF provincial chairperson Joel Biggie Matiza said they were now focused on putting final touches to preparations for the mega gathering that is expected to draw 7 000 delegates.

"We are past the election mode as we redirect our energy towards preparations for the annual conference to be held next month. We are 95% through with the final preparations and on Wednesday (tomorrow), Rooneys will be on site to deal with the issue of pegging tents among other facilities," Matiza said.

Last week, Zanu-PF national secretary for administration Obert Mpofu visited Goromonzi High School, the venue, where he appreciated the work being done at the venue.

Zanu-PF provincial secretary for administration Kudzai Majuru, who is part of the technical team, said they had set November 15 as the day to finish all the major preparations.

"We have covered much ground and by (November) 15 we will be through with the entire needs. The team for tents will be here this week to take over. As for water and sanitation facilities we are done, the roads are in perfect condition after the repairs, while accommodation for the delegates has already been secured," he said.

The ruling party tasked Mashonaland East province to host the annual conference to be held at the learning institution after a bid to have it hosted in Seke hit a snag.
