Ex-Zinara boss jailed

Former Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA) Director, Simon Mudzingwa Taranhike will spend the next 15 months behind bars after he was found guilty and convicted for criminal abuse of office charges.

Taranhike, was this Thursday convicted after a full trial by the regional magistrate, Hosea Mujaya.

Mujaya initially sentenced Taranhike to 30 months in jail before suspending 6 months on condition of good behaviour. Another 9 months were suspended on condition that Taranhike restitutes 1 800 litres of fuel to Zinara before December 31 2019

In passing sentence, Mujaya said he took into consideration that Taranhike is a first offender and a family man. Mujaya said it is true that Taranhike did not directly benefit from the commission of the offense. He further stated that Taranhike lost his job as a result of the offense.

Mujaya, however, said the court cannot turn a blind eye on corrupt activities and should pass an exemplary sentence.

The former Zinara boss is facing charges of criminal abuse of office, It is the state's case that between January 2009 and May 31 2016, he influenced awarding of contracts worth US$20 million for rehabilitation of roads in Zaka, Buhera, Mhondoro-Ngezi, Murewa and Goromonzi.

The contracts were awarded to Fremus Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd without following procurement procedures. According to the case outline, Chitukutuku had the power over disbursement of road rehabilitation funds.
