Ex-Mnangagwa aide bid for bail flops

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa's former aide, Douglas Tapfuma's bid to be released on bail, citing changed circumstances, hit a snag after the High Court ruled that it had no jurisdiction to entertain the appeal.

Tapfuma, who is accused of evading payment of car import duty using the State Residences Department's name, has been in remand prison since August after he was denied bail on numerous occasions.

Through his lawyer Jonathan Samkange, Tapfuma had presented changed circumstances before High Court judge Tawanda Chitapi but the matter was subsequently struck off the roll.

Samkange had argued that the State had made baseless allegations and could not prove that Tapfuma had imported over 100 motor vehicles.

The State's allegations are that Tapfuma purchased two personal mini buses from South Africa under the guise of government on April 10, 2018.
