Mnangagwa succession plan revealed

HAVING almost lost his life for wanting to succeed Zimbabwe's late former leader Robert Mugabe, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has initiated the process of handing over the reins of power to a younger successor one day, a senior government official has revealed.

Speaking to the Daily News On Sunday, the permanent secretary in the Information, Broadcasting and Media Services ministry, Nick Mangwana, said Mnangagwa had a "clear plan" about passing over the leadership baton to a younger successor.

Mnangagwa's recent Cabinet reshuffle, in which he retained most of his close allies and also bloodied in Zanu-PF's Young Turks, was the beginning of the succession plan, Mangwana said further — adding that the president's preference was for a much younger person to succeed him.

"He himself has said he wishes he could leave power to a young leader. The point is why did the president appoint six deputy ministers, and the answer is that he had to ensure that young people learn the ropes.

"He promised the youth that there would be more young people in his government.

"But when we talk about his successor it is not about now. Like in any other organisation, a succession plan is a full schedule and the president is infusing youths for them to learn leadership," Mangwana told the Daily News On Sunday.
