Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has announced that 2.5 percent will be deducted from every government employee to set up shops that will sell subsidised commodities to members of the army.

Ncube said the decision was reached during Tuesday's cabinet meeting after consultations with the Public Service Commission.

The move has been seen as attempts by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to quell discontent in the army that could lead to a possible coup.

A number of junior army officers have been arrested for theft and taking part in gold wars, an indication that they have also been affected by the economic melt down.
