Female parliamentarians peacefully demonstrated against Gender Based Violence in Parliament yesterday (Tuesday) by sitting on the floor as part of #shedecides initiative.

This comes as International Women's day is celebrating on March 2020 under the theme "I AM GENERATION EQUALITY: REALIZING WOMEN'S RIGHTS" and it marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and platform for Action.

Honourable Goodluck Kwaramba chairperson of Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Committee delivered her speech in parliament stating concerns over the regression in the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

"Gender based violence which is on the rise, passion killings that are the order of the day, sexual harassment and abuse of women and girls in the workplace and public spaces."

She said the committee is gravely disturbed about the machete gang attacks on both men and women especially elderly women who are raped and murdered.

She read that there is a need to call upon government to enact an enabling environment for teenagers to decide, access reproductive health services and to safe abortion.

The committee called upon the empowerment of rural women and for parliament to expedite the implementation of the institutional gender policy which provides for institutional mechanisms to deal with sexual harassment and violence against women.
