High Court Judge, Justice Nokuthula Moyo has freed an army sergeant jailed for brutally assaulting his 12 year old son with a switch.

Khulumani Nkomo was jailed for 24 months by Lupane Magistrate Nodumo Masuku after convicting him for  an assault charge which he committed on 31 January last year.

Moyo granted Nkomo, of Jotsholo, Lupane District, $500 pending his appeal against the sentence handed at the lower court.

The bail is coupled with conditions that Nkomo reports once a week to Hwange Police Station and that he lives peacefully with his wife and son.

It is the state's case that Masuku severely assaulted his son with a switch accusing him of using a thinner switch to herd cattle.

The helpless boy fled and sought refuge at his grandmother's nearby homestead.

So severe were the wounds from the assault that Masuku's son had to seek medical attention at St Luke's Hospital in Lupane.

Masuku's wife made a report leading to his arrest and subsequent jailing by the magistrates courts.
