A HARARE man allegedly attempted to force rat poison into his wife's mouth because she had declined to reveal her phone password, a court heard yesterday.

George Lovell, 39, of Glenara Avenue, Hillside, Harare, was charged with theft, physical abuse, pointing a firearm and attempted murder when he appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.

His placement on remand will be finalised today after he complained of being over-detained in police custody. The incident allegedly occurred on March 6 in Greendale where Lovell's wife Regedzai Peresah was attending a funeral.

The court heard Lovell began shouting at his wife at the funeral, accusing her of having extra marital affairs. He allegedly grabbed his wife's handbag and stole US$200 and a Samsung cellphone before leaving the scene.

The following day around 3am, Lovell arrived home and began assaulting his wife demanding her password.

He battered her with clenched fists and used a plastic bag to suffocate her until she lost consciousness.

He reportedly forced his wife's mouth open and tried to put powdered rat poison, but Peresah pleaded with him and surrendered her phone password.  The matter was later reported to the police leading to Lovell's arrest.
