THE government has said the current wave of coronavirus (Covid-19) which has affected several sectors in the country will not have an effect on the preparations for the 2020 Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) June and November examinations.

There have been calls for relaxation on deadlines for registration by teachers' associations to minimise the risk of Covid-19 spreading when candidates visit examination centres for verification of registration information.

In a statement, Primary and Secondary Education minister Cain Mathema said physical contact will not be necessary as Zimsec has taken business online.

"The ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to inform parents and guardians that preparations for the 2020 June and November examinations are going on as scheduled.

"As a result of the lockdown announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa Zimsec has provided an electronic platform for submission of candidate data and proof of payment for the 2020 June and November examinations," he said.

The ministry said a call centre has been set up at Zimsec offices to assist those who would have encountered challenges in uploading the data.

He said there will be no need for physical presence in verifying registration data as this will be done using the statement of entry.

Schools closed earlier than planned after a ban on public gatherings and when they will be open now depends on the containment of the virus.
