Mpilo Clinical Director Dr. Solwayo Ngwenya has invited widespread condemnation after he posted a vague message on social media insinuating that he had contracted the deadly coronavirus.

Dr Ngwenya posted a tweet on Wednesday evening saying, "Coronavirus; of all the people why befall me! I have been your biggest fighter. Yet today as the sunset, a catastrophe unfolds in my hands. Why me? Why us? This is terrible. Now if my fellow citizens make mistakes, the grave diggers will be out soon. Nkulunkulu protect them."

Speaking to this publication analyst Shephard Dube said it was unfortunate that a senior government official had chosen to send a vague message at a time when the country was facing a renewed threat from the pandemic.

"I have read the social media statements by the respected doctor and I can only say it is unfortunate to see senior officials who are entrusted with the lives of Zimbabweans using social media to utter vague statements that put the country on panic mode. All I can say is that Dr. Ngwenya you are a veteran medical practitioner and public relations is not a new thing to you, please provide the leadership that we expect from you."

Zimbabwe Christian Leaders in South Africa President Kelvin Mazhandu said Dr. Ngwenya's statements had ignited panic on citizens who looked up to him as a frontline leader during the crisis.

"As the Christian community we always support the role played by medical practitioners during this pandemic," Mazhandu said. "But it pains us when we see respected and respectable leaders like Dr. Ngwenya communicating with the community using riddles. What the good doctor must be aware of is that he is a public figure, a leader, and a frontline soldier in this fight. Any sign of despair from him send a chilling message to the generality of the population. I hope he takes this incident to introspect and become a better leader that we always view him as."
