Mayor Solomon Mguni; Minister Judith Ncube visit Luveve for a fact finding mission

City of Bulawayo Mayor His Worship Solomon Madlala Mguni and the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube led a delegation that visited Luveve township on Tuesday morning to ascertain the extent of the tragic situation that has seen residents dying after reportedly consuming contaminated water.

Speaking to this publication on Tuesday afternoon, Mguni said, "The visit to Luveve clinic was meant to see firsthand, the extent of the disaster in Luveve area and to ascertain the state of preparedness of our staff to handle the situation. We noted with sadness from the statistics that the numbers keep on increasing though under control."

The Mayor said the council has directed its engineers and nursing staff to give urgent attention to Luveve.

"We would like to pay our gratitude to the government through Natpharm for availing more medication for the ailment. Following yesterday's crisis meeting of the council, we have now directed that more manpower from other clinics be channeled toward Luveve Clinic. Our nursing staff has been working round the clock to try to contain and mitigate the problem.

"We have also directed that our engineers isolate the Old Luveve area and keep a constant and continuous supply of municipal water to the area. Our teams have been instructed to close all the death wells along sewer lines that the residents have been using to water their vegetables and sugarcane."

Concerning the tragic death of Luveve residents, the Mayor said, "The council is still investigating the causes of the deaths. The results of stool samples that were sent to labs are expected by the end of the week. We will let the public know."

The delegation included Senior Council staff including Acting Town Clerk Mrs S. Zhou, Director of City Health  Dr E. Sibanda and Director of Engineering Services Engineer S. Dube.
