A BOGUS lands officer appeared in court on Wednesday facing allegations of fraud after he allegedly demanded Zanu-PF membership cards and cash from desperate home seekers in Banket.

Lovemore Lunga (48), who appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Court, was granted $1 000 bail and remanded to September 30 pending finalisation of investigations.

Allegations are that Lunga misrepresented to the complainant (not named for ethical reasons) that he was an employee of the Lands ministry attached to Minister Perrance Shiri's office and was in a position to facilitate allocation of land to the complainant.

Lunga asked for Zanu-PF party cards from the complainant and his wife, which they produced.

The cards, however, had expired. Lunga charged them US$15 each for new cards.

He also demanded that the duo gives him money for fuel to proceed to Banket and was given $580 through EcoCash and another US$80.

The State alleged the complainant became suspicious when Lunga failed to deliver and reported the matter to the police.

Using a similar modus operandi, Lunga allegedly duped another unnamed complainant of US$5 600 and $3 200 and nothing was recovered.
