Harare Magistrate Lisa Mutendereki has fined Mount Meru Zimbabwe US$600 after being found guilty of selling contaminated diesel.
The case, prosecuted by Mandirasa Chigumira, centered on an incident on October 24, 2023, when informant Shakespear Kunaka visited the company's premises. Posing as a Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) official, Kunaka requested diesel samples for testing at ZERA's mobile laboratory, conducted in the presence of employee Tichaona Cherai.
Laboratory analysis revealed that the diesel had been adulterated with lighter petroleum products, failing to meet the ZWS751 standards for flash point and density. The contaminated fuel, approximately 9,000 liters, was sealed with tamper-evident seals and remains in ZERA custody at a secured site.
The court's ruling serves as a warning to fuel retailers about adherence to industry standards and the serious consequences of distributing substandard petroleum products.
