Police lock down Masvingo

15 Jul 2020 at 08:33hrs | Views
POLICE yesterday imposed a total lockdown in Masvingo city, demanding letters of employment while barring some motorists from driving into the central business district (CBD).

Some entry routes into the CBD were blocked as police imposed a localised lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Charity Mazula said the tightening of the screws was due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases, as well as the rise in local transmissions.

"We had to be strict because of the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections. Again, people were now relaxed thinking the disease was over. Some are getting into town unnecessarily, so we have to limit movement into town," Mazula said.

Observers said the government was using the increase in infections to block the planned July 31 demonstration over the increase in the cost of living, as well as rampant corruption in the country.
