Challenges mount for Mwonzora, property attached

Douglas Mwonzora, the embattled opposition politician and lawyer, is facing significant legal and financial troubles after his law firm, Mwonzora and Associates, had its office property seized last week over unpaid rent.

The firm is reported to owe US$3,750 in arrears for the period from July to September 2024 for its premises at 44 Eastcourt Road, Belvedere. The landlord, Simon Denhere, initiated legal proceedings on September 19, filing summons for the overdue rent at the Harare Civil Court.

Through an ex parte application, Denhere secured a court order authorizing the attachment of property without requiring Mwonzora's presence in court. Last Tuesday, the Messenger of Court enforced the order, seizing several items from Mwonzora's office, including: Sofas, a reception desk, an office desk, four computers, two printers, office chairs and a generator.

The seizure was conducted under Section 34 of the Magistrates Court Act, designed to prevent tenants from evading debts by vacating premises.

Denhere has also filed for the firm's eviction and is demanding an additional US$1,250 in holding-over damages for the continued occupation of the premises. Mwonzora must pay this amount to reclaim the seized property and resolve the dispute.

This latest development adds to Mwonzora's mounting difficulties, as he navigates political and professional challenges. Once a prominent figure in Zimbabwe's opposition politics, his political standing has waned amid party defections and financial struggles.

Observers note that these legal and financial issues may further strain Mwonzora's ability to focus on his political career and maintain his professional reputation.
