Zimborders Consortium, the entity managing the Beitbridge Border Post, has announced that it will be increasing access toll fees for commercial vehicles starting February 1, 2025. The fee hikes will apply solely to commercial vehicles, while toll fees for light vehicles, motorcycles, and minibuses will remain unchanged.
In a statement released by Zimborders, the consortium explained that the fee increases were necessary to counter the effects of inflation while maintaining the quality of services provided at the border. "We have worked diligently to keep these increases to a minimum in order to help ease the burden of inflation on our customers while ensuring we can continue to provide the quality service you expect," the statement read.
The toll fees for non-commercial vehicles, such as motorcycles, light vehicles, and minibuses, will remain unaffected for the entire year of 2025. Zimborders emphasized its commitment to these vehicle categories, stating that it would absorb inflationary impacts for them during the year. "In recognition of our valued relationship with you, we are pleased to announce that there will be no increase in fees for non-commercial vehicles," the statement added.
The planned fee hikes will primarily affect commercial vehicles, including light goods vehicles, coaches, heavy vehicles, goods vehicles, and abnormal load vehicles. The toll fees for these vehicles will see a modest increase. Parking bay fees will also rise slightly.
For instance, light goods vehicles, coaches, and similar vehicles will now be charged US$85, up from US$83. Heavy vehicles will face a toll of US$122, an increase from US$119. Goods vehicles will now incur a fee of US$213, compared to the previous US$207. Abnormal load vehicles will be charged US$365, up from US$355.
Zimborders is a public-private partnership, bringing together Zimbabwean and South African investors, financial institutions, and international entrepreneurs to support the operations of Beitbridge Border Post. The partnership, under a long-term concession agreement with the Zimbabwe government, is responsible for managing the border post and ensuring that its operations continue smoothly.
The Beitbridge Border Post remains one of the busiest crossing points in Southern Africa, facilitating significant trade and movement between Zimbabwe and South Africa. The planned toll fee adjustments are expected to impact businesses and travelers who rely on the border for their daily operations.
