Grace Mugabe attends Nujoma burial

Zimbabwe's former first lady, Grace Mugabe, is in Namibia to extend her condolences to the family of the late former president Sam Nujoma, who passed away on February 8 at the age of 95. Nujoma, a key figure in Namibia's liberation struggle and its first president after independence, was a close ally of Zimbabwe's late former president, Robert Mugabe.

Grace Mugabe visited the Nujoma family and met with his widow, Kovambo Nujoma, who is 93 years old. The former first lady offered her heartfelt condolences and shared words of comfort with the grieving family. As part of her visit, Grace Mugabe also signed a condolence book dedicated to the late Namibian leader, honoring his legacy and contributions to Namibia's independence and development.

Sam Nujoma played a pivotal role in leading Namibia's liberation movement, the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), and was instrumental in securing the country's independence from South Africa. He became Namibia's first president in 1990 and served three terms until 2005. His legacy is celebrated not only in Namibia but also in Zimbabwe, where a major street, formerly known as Second Street, was renamed in his honor.

The Nujoma family is preparing for a state funeral on Saturday, where the late president will be laid to rest. His passing marks the end of an era for Namibia, and many are reflecting on the immense impact he had on the country's journey to freedom and self-determination.

Grace Mugabe's visit is a significant gesture, given the long-standing ties between the Mugabe and Nujoma families, who shared a bond based on their mutual commitment to African liberation movements and their leadership in the post-colonial era.
