A Harare man, Succeed Mukaro, has been sentenced to two years in prison for unlawfully entering and stealing mobile phones valued at over US$15,000 from a shop reportedly owned by Miniyothabo Chiwenga, wife of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.

Mukaro pleaded guilty to unlawful entry when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera. The magistrate initially sentenced him to five years but suspended two years on condition of good behavior. One year was also set aside conditional upon restitution to the victim.

According to court proceedings, on May 31, 2025, a supervisor at the Style By Minie VVIP shop in Borrowdale secured the premises by locking all windows and doors after closing. Mukaro allegedly broke the front glass display to gain entry and stole mobile phones worth US$15,915.

Detectives launched an investigation and on June 3 received information about suspected stolen phones being sold at Ximex Mall in Harare's city center. They located cellphone dealer Blessed Luciano and recovered several phones, which were confirmed to be part of the stolen property.

Luciano revealed that he had purchased the phones from Isaac Craig Chaza on June 1. Further police operations led to Chaza's arrest at Ximex Mall, where he was accompanied by Strive Makangira. Additional phones were recovered from them, and both were questioned about the source of the stolen items.

Chaza admitted that Mukaro had given him three phones to sell and that he had sold five others to Luciano. Chaza and Makangira then cooperated with detectives to trace Mukaro to Joina City Mall, where he was apprehended.

Following his arrest, Mukaro led police to his residence in Domboshava, where more stolen phones were recovered.

The court ruling underscores the commitment by law enforcement to curb theft and criminal activities, particularly those affecting high-profile business owners in Harare.
