Several housing projects aimed at providing decent and secure accommodation for members of Zimbabwe's security sector are planned across the country, building on the success of the recently commissioned Chimoio Camp Housing Scheme in Harare.
On Friday, four newly completed flats in Harare were officially opened, offering a total of 96 housing units dedicated to members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). The initiative underscores the government's recognition of the crucial role police officers and other security personnel play in maintaining law and order nationwide.
Speaking to ZBC News, some beneficiaries of the project expressed heartfelt gratitude. Sergeant Caroline Vuma said the allocation of accommodation would greatly ease her daily struggles with commuting. "I am so excited that I have been allocated accommodation here and this will go a long way in motivating me because I was finding it difficult to travel. I want to thank His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa for this project," she stated.
Superintendent Molin Rumbwere also echoed the appreciation, adding, "I want to thank His Excellency for giving us accommodation, we are no longer stressed when it comes to the issue of travelling and accommodation."
The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Honourable Kazembe Kazembe, confirmed that similar housing projects are set to be rolled out countrywide. "It is an ongoing project and we are going to roll out such projects nationwide. The President has made it clear that our Police officers must have decent accommodation. I can confirm that there are ongoing projects, including in Dotito in Mashonaland Central Province," Minister Kazembe revealed.
Harare Metropolitan Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Charles Tawengwa, praised President Mnangagwa for his commitment to modernizing Zimbabwe's infrastructure. He highlighted recent major projects such as the commissioning of the iconic Trabablas Interchange, which has helped reduce traffic congestion and accidents, and the Geo Pomona Waste Management facility, both transformative developments for the capital city.
Last year, the government also commissioned all-terrain service vehicles for the police force to enhance operational capabilities, further reflecting its dedication to strengthening security services.
The nationwide expansion of housing projects for security personnel is a critical step in improving the welfare of civil servants who play a pivotal role in Zimbabwe's peace and stability.
