Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga visited Lusaka yesterday to convey condolences on behalf of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe following the death of former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

In his remarks, VP Chiwenga described Zimbabwe and Zambia as "inseparable twins," underscoring the deep and enduring bond between the two nations, especially in times of grief and solidarity. He highlighted the historic support Zambia extended to Zimbabwe during its liberation struggle, calling Zambia a "crucial Frontline State" whose generosity helped shape Zimbabwe's journey to independence.

"I bring you greetings from your brother during this difficult time that your nation is facing. The dark cloud hanging over the republic is what your brother, His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has sent me to convey to you, Your Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, the Government, and the people of Zambia, regarding this loss of your former President Edgar Lungu," VP Chiwenga said.

Former President Lungu, who passed away on June 5 at the age of 68, was fondly remembered for his leadership and contributions to Zambia and the Southern African region at large.

VP Chiwenga's sentiments echoed those expressed by President Hakainde Hichilema, who reiterated the close ties between the two countries. President Hichilema affirmed that "what affects Zambia also affects Zimbabwe," emphasizing the interconnectedness and mutual interests that define their relationship.

He further stressed the importance of educating younger generations about this shared history and unity to preserve the strength of their bond for years to come. "We are profoundly moved by this solemn gesture from President Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe during this dark chapter in our nation's history," President Hichilema remarked.

The visit reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to stand together through challenges and continue fostering their historic partnership.
