Nelson Chamisa, the MDC leader, has disbanded the party's ward structures to merge them with branches as resolved at the opposition party's congress in May.

The party's organising secretary, Amos Chibaya, told the Daily News yesterday that the move was prompted by the realisation that the country's biggest opposition party was top-heavy.

"In the previous arrangement, the party was top-heavy and bottom-light where we had senior officials who are not in touch with the grassroots, hence the decision to do away with the ward," Chibaya said.

He also revealed that the branch structure has been elevated to be the most powerful organ of the party with the power to elect individuals for public office, including the president of the party.

At its formation in 1999, the MDC had the ward as its lowest structure followed by the district, the province and the national executive before the branch structure was introduced.
