Zimbabwe's Sakhile Dube left a lasting impression at the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant in Mexico, finishing among the top 30 contestants. Despite falling short of the top 12, her journey captivated fans and brought pride to her nation.
Dancer Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark was crowned Miss Universe 2024, making history as the first Danish contestant to win the prestigious title. Nigeria's Chidimma Adetshina was named first runner-up, with Mexico's Maria Fernanda Beltran securing the second runner-up position. The top five finalists also included Thailand's Opal Suchata Chuangsri and Venezuela's Ileana Marquez.
A Nation United by Sakhile
Sakhile, who was a crowd favorite throughout the competition, dazzled in a gown designed by Zimbabwean designer Ishmael Tsakatsa of Zarguesia. Although she did not progress to the top 12, her participation united Zimbabweans, who rallied behind her with unwavering support.
Expressing her gratitude before the final stage, Sakhile reflected on her journey:
"I step onto the final stage of Miss Universe, representing my beautiful country, Zimbabwe. It has been a path filled with challenges, growth, and unforgettable moments. Your unwavering belief in me has been my fortress," she said.
She emphasized the strength and vibrancy of Zimbabwe's culture, which shaped her identity and inspired her to represent her nation on the global stage.
Surprising Omission
Fans were surprised that Sakhile did not qualify for the pageant's Voice for Change competition, a platform where contestants advocate for social causes. Despite this, social media was filled with messages of pride and support.
"We loved Sakhile and have accepted the results. Her participation united us as a nation despite our cultural and religious differences," said Lupita Makomborero of Harare.
A Bright Future Ahead
While the Miss Universe crown eluded her, many believe Sakhile's future is bright.
Monalisa Paradzai, a hairdresser from Harare, said: "Her failure to win is not the end. She has many opportunities ahead, from fashion modeling to representing brands. Well done, Sakhile!"
The 27-year-old model expressed her heartfelt appreciation to Zimbabweans and the Miss Universe Zimbabwe organization for their support.
"Thank you for nurturing my dreams and creating a platform for young women like me to rise and inspire others," Sakhile said.
Her participation has left a legacy of unity and inspiration, proving that Zimbabwe's resilience and talent shine brightly on the world stage.
