2 hrs ago | Views
Prominent businessman Kuda Tagwirei has dismissed rumors suggesting he is considering a takeover of Kwekwe United Football Club, the newly promoted Premier Soccer League (PSL) side.
Speaking to Nehanda Radio, Tagwirei, the owner of Sakunda Holdings, rejected the speculation with a brief but firm response: "Not true."
The rumors had gained traction in local football circles, fueled by Tagwirei's notable history of investing in Zimbabwean football.
Sakunda's Role in Zimbabwean Football
Sakunda Holdings has been a significant player in the football scene, previously sponsoring two of the country's most iconic clubs, Highlanders and Dynamos, under a landmark deal spanning from 2021 to 2023. Although the formal sponsorship agreement ended, Sakunda reportedly continues to provide financial support to both clubs, bolstering their operations and player welfare.
Kwekwe United's PSL Aspirations
Kwekwe United recently earned promotion to the PSL and has drawn attention as the team prepares for its debut season. The club's rise has sparked interest from fans and stakeholders, prompting speculation about potential investment or sponsorship deals.
While Tagwirei's denial puts the takeover rumors to rest, the development has reignited conversations about the critical role of private sector investment in strengthening Zimbabwe's football leagues.
Focus on Future Investment
Despite distancing himself from Kwekwe United, Tagwirei's continued involvement with Highlanders and Dynamos underscores Sakunda Holdings' commitment to the sport. Analysts suggest that increased collaboration between private entities and football clubs could help uplift Zimbabwean football at all levels.
For now, Kwekwe United will look elsewhere for partnerships as they gear up for their first PSL campaign.
