Matabeleland South Rural Infrastructure Development Authority (RIDA) acting provincial coordinator, Mr. Joseph Dube, tragically lost his life in a car accident along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Highway on Sunday evening. He was 54.
Dube, who was driving a Toyota Hilux double cab, was traveling from Gwanda to Bulawayo when he lost control of the vehicle near the 114km peg in Nsindi, just outside Gwanda Town. The vehicle veered off the road, overturning twice before landing on its left side. Dube was ejected from the vehicle and landed approximately 15 meters away, dying on the spot.
The accident occurred around 6 p.m. and has been confirmed by Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Stanford Mguni.
"I can confirm that we recorded a fatal incident where one person died at the 114km peg along Bulawayo-Gwanda Road. The driver, who was heading toward Bulawayo, lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and landed on its side. Unfortunately, he was thrown out of the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries," said Assistant Inspector Mguni.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly as the festive season approaches and rainy weather conditions make roads more hazardous.
Loss to the Province
The news of Dube's passing has sent shockwaves through Matabeleland South, where he was widely respected for his dedication and hard work.
In a statement, Matabeleland South acting director of Local Government, Mr. Zachariah Jusah, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
"On a sad note, yesterday we lost one of our hardworking and dedicated members. A dark cloud has befallen us as Mat South Province, especially the WASH Sector, following the passing of our PWSSC Chair, Joseph Dube. He was a committed leader and an asset to the province and the nation," said Mr. Jusah.
Dube's contributions to infrastructure development, particularly his work in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives, were widely acknowledged.
Road Safety Reminder
As investigations into the accident continue, authorities are emphasizing the importance of road safety, particularly during the festive season. Drivers are urged to maintain caution, adhere to speed limits, and remain vigilant, especially during rainy conditions that may affect road surfaces.
The tragic passing of Mr. Joseph Dube marks a significant loss to Matabeleland South and Zimbabwe's development efforts. His legacy of service will be remembered by colleagues and the communities he served.
